Walks question

Answer

What time do walks start

'A' Walks start at 10:30 sharp.
'B' Walks start at 11:00 unless otherwise stated

How long are the walks

'A' Walks are usually between 8 & 12 miles.
'A' Tuesday walks are between 7 & 8.5 and are taken at a moderate pace
'B' Walks are between 4 & 6 and are taken at a leisurely pace

What sort of walks do you do

Newton Abbot Ramblers cover all types of walking, coastal path, moor and countryside

How often are the walks

There are 4 to 5 walks every week, excluding Christmas Day
'A' group walks on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday
'B' group walks on a Thursday and Sunday

How much time does a walk take

A good average is 2 miles in an hour this would include breaks. For instance a 10 mile walk would take 5 hours to complete. This may seem slow as the average walking time on the flat is 3MPH however 2 miles when walking with a group is good in Devon.

What do I need to start walking

At first some basic equipment. Good walking boots, waterproof jacket and trousers, a rucksack. for more information on Equipment follow this link

How do I get to the start point

There is no official car share scheme, members tend to make their own arrangements. However quite a few car share and are willing to give lifts if asked.

How can I find the start point

Go to the walks page and click on Grid Reference this will produce a map of the start point. Alternatively the Ordnance Survey map of the region. Another good source for locating start points is the Philip's Street Atlas for Devon. Sold in bookshops £9.99

What should I bring with me

Appropriate clothing for the day, a rucksack, hot & cold drinks, food and something to sit on, which is waterproof. In the summer make sure you have plenty of water and when sunny: Sun hat, sun tan lotion

Who Leads the walk

All our walks are led by experienced members, we aim to take a common-sense approach to the safety of our members, but all those attending do so entirely at their own risk.

How often are walks cancelled

Walk are rarely cancelled however they are subject to cancellation at the discretion of the Leader in the event of inclement weather. A telephone call to the Leader may save a wasted journey, should it be necessary to cancel a walk.

Which group should I start walking with

The choice is yours, you can walk with whichever group you wish and on a day that suits you best. If you are an experienced walker start with either the Sunday or Wednesday  'A' walks, if you are less experienced start with a Thursday or Sunday 'B' walk or a Tuesday 'A' walk.

Can I bring my Dog

Dogs are allowed on walks at the discretion of the leader. On walks where dogs are allowed they should be kept under control to the leader's satisfaction at all times and where specific conditions apply e.g. on new access land those regulations must be complied with.  They are not allowed on coach trips.

Dogs and Access Land

We have noticed that some of our walks cross areas from which dogs are now banned under new public access legislation. We would not know in advance of this, as we are only aware of this as we see the signs on our walks. You would need to turn back or find your own alternative route if this were the case on a walk

Technical Questions

Answers

How do I read a Grid Reference

The easiest way to remember is to say along the corridor before you go up the stairs.

All Ordnance Survey maps are covered in a series of blue grid lines. These grid lines help you pinpoint an exact location anywhere on the map by giving a unique number known as a grid reference. The vertical lines are called eastings, as they go up in value as you travel east on the map. The horizontal lines are called northings, since they go up in value as you travel north on the map. If you want to pinpoint an exact place on a map, such as a walk start point, you will need to use a six-figure grid reference, which you get by putting together the numbers of the easting and northing that cross in its bottom left-hand corner.  For a more comprehensive answer please select this link

Is there anyone who can help me with my GPS

Yes we have members that regularly use Garmin GPS's and Memory Map software and will be available to help you.
